What Your Birth Details Actually Do in the Calculation

Birth date anchors the Moon's position in its monthly cycle. The Moon travels roughly 12–13 degrees per day, covering about 390 degrees in its 28-day cycle. On any given date, it's somewhere in that orbit — but "somewhere" still spans half a zodiac sign's worth of movement over the course of a day.

Birth time is what narrows that range to a single degree. The Moon moves approximately 0.5 degrees per hour. If you were born at 6 AM versus 6 PM on the same date, the Moon has moved 6 full degrees between those two moments. Near a sign boundary, that 6 degrees can be the difference between two completely different Moon signs. This is why "I was born around 8 in the morning" is genuinely less useful than the exact time from a birth certificate.

Birth city provides the latitude, longitude, and timezone — all three of which matter. The timezone converts your local birth time to UTC, which is what the ephemeris calculation requires.
